1. Can Doors Open organizers apply to The Heritage Canada Foundation for funding?

No. The Heritage Canada Foundation is not a funding body. The foundation has developed guides to assist communities in organizing their own fundraising strategies, among other things. To obtain copies, you can register by clicking on Organizing Your Event.

  2. Can participating building owners charge admission?

No. A guiding principle of the Doors Open concept is that admission to all buildings, without exception, is FREE. Accessibility is a key component of the Doors Open goal to facilitate a community's discovery of its architecture and built heritage.

  3. Who is a Doors Open event designed to serve?

Doors Open is generated by people's desire to celebrate their own heritage and the event is designed to reflect that. It has proven to be a hugely successful means of heightening community pride through an increased awareness of local architectural heritage resources. The event celebrates a community's collective accomplishments through the celebration of its built heritage.

The success of Doors Open has inevitably attracted visitors excited by the prospect of exploring a town or city by travelling through its buildings, adding a cultural tourism dimension to the event. Most Doors Open events are marketed outside the host town or city.

  4. What can The Heritage Canada Foundation offer participants to assist in the organization of their event?

The foundation has developed extensive materials to assist communities in such areas as organizational structure, recruiting and managing the necessary volunteers, attracting corporate sponsors and media partners, and developing project literature.
